The dream of flying into outer space, cherished by the Chinese people for centuries, will soon come true.
China launched its fourth unmanned spacecraft “Shenzhou Ⅳ” on December 30 at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in Gansu Province. It was the 27th consecutive and successful launch of China - made rockets since October 1996. This launch has made it more realistic for China to send a person into space on its own following Russia and the USA.
Qi Faren, leading designer of the spacecraft system, said all the functions designed for manned flights have withstood the test of three previous, successful launches and return landings of the “Shenzhou” spaceships.
China launched the “Shenzhou Ⅰ”, “Shenzhou Ⅱ”and “Shenzhou Ⅲ”spacecrafts in 1999,2001 and 2002 respectively.
“Shouzhou Ⅳ” was to make it a more comfortable place in which astronauts can live and work. All parts of the application system for manned flight are aboard the “Shenzhou Ⅳ”craft in all test flights.
China’s manned flight programme began in 1992. A number of unmanned test flights will be launched before Chinese astronauts are sent into space.
Leading scientists in charge of China’s manned space programme said the successful launch of the “Shenzhou Ⅳ” laid a solid foundation for the country’s future task of sending Chinese astronauts to outer space.

Passage two
Greenspace fadilities are contributing to an important degree to the quality of city environment. Fortunately it is no longer necessary that every lecture or every book about this subject to start
with the proof of this idea. At present it is generally accepted ,although more as a self-evident statement than on the base of a closely-reasoned scientific proof.Recognizing the importance of greenspace in the urban environment is a first step on the right way. This does not mean, however, that sufficient details are known about the function of green space in towns and about the way in which the inhabitant are using these spaces. As to this subject I shall ,within the scope of this lecture ,enter into one aspect only ,namely the recreative function of green space facilities .
The theoretical separation of living ,traffic and recreative which for many years , has been used in town-and-country planning ,has in my opinion resulted in disproportionate attention for forms of recreative far from home .
However, there was relatively little attention for improvement possibilities in the direct neighborhood of the home.We have come to the conclusion that is not right , because an important part of the time which we do not pass in sleeping or working , is used for activities at and around home.So it is obvious that recreative in the open air has to begin at the street-door of the house .The urban environment has to offer as many recreation activities as possible ,and the design of these has to be such that more obligatory activities can also have a recreative aspect . The very best standard of living is nothing if it is possible to take a pleasant walk in the district , if the children cannot be allowed to play in the streets , because the risks of traffic are too great , if during shopping you can nowhere find a spot for enjoying for a moment the nice weather ,in short ,if you only feel yourself at home after the street-door of your house is closed after you .

Passage four
For an increasing number of students at American universities, Old is suddenly in. The reason is obvious: the graying of America means jobs, coupled with the aging of the baby-boom generation, a longer life span means that the nation’s elderly population is bound to expand significantly over the next 50 years. By 2050, 25 percent of all Americans will be older than 65, up from 14 percent in 1995. The change poses profound questions for government and society, of course. But it also creates career opportunities in medicine and health professions, and in law and business as well. “In addition to the doctors, we’re going to need more sociologists, biologists, urban planners and specialized lawyers,” says Professor Edward Schneider of the University of Southern California’s (USC) School of Gerontology
Lawyers can specialize in “elder law,” which covers everything from trusts and estates to nursing-home abuse and age discrimination. Businessmen see huge opportunities in the elder
market because the baby boomers, 74 million strong, are likely to be the wealthiest group of retirees in human history. “Any student who combines an expert knowledge in gerontology with, say, an MBA or law degree will have a license to print money,” one professor says.
Margarite Santos is a 21-year-old senior at USC. She began college as a biology major but found she was “really bored with bacteria.” So she took a class in gerontology and discovered that she lied it. She says, “I did volunteer work in retirement homes and it was very satisfying.” 56 “... Old is suddenly in” (Line 1, Para. 1) most probably means “________”.

D) American colleges have realized the need of enrolling older students
57. With the aging of America, lawyers can benefit ________.
A) from the adoption of the “elder law”
B) from rendering special services to the elderly
C) by enriching their professional knowledge
D) by winning the trust of the elderly to promote their own interests
58. Why can businessmen make money in the emerging elder market?
A) Retirees are more generous in spending money.
B) They can employ more gerontologists.
C) The elderly possess an enormous purchasing power.
D) There are more elderly people working than before.
59. Who can make big money in the new century according to the passage?
A) Retirees who are business-minded.
B) The volunteer workers in retirement homes.
